THERE IS A GREAT COMMISSION AND AN URGENT NEED
The Great Commission challenges us as Christians to go into all the world and make disciples of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:19). We have chosen to do that through the United Methodist Church and there is an urgent need.
· More than 6.5 million people reside within the bounds of the West Ohio Conference
o More than half (50%) are not part of a faith community;
o 48% of this population is under the age of 35;
o It is estimated that only 10% of the elementary age children in West Ohio will be involved in a faith community by the time they are adults.
- There are nearly 1,200 United Methodist Churches in the West Ohio Conference
o In 50% of those churches the average attendance is declining;
25% are stable or showing small growth
25% are demonstrating steady and sustained growth.
o 40% of the congregations have reported no “professions of faith.”
389 (38%) congregations conducted Confirmation Classes.
THE GOAL OF Strength for Today...Bright Hope for Tomorrow is to increase the number of congregations that are healthy, growing, spritually vital, risk-taking centers for making disciples of Jesus Christ that transform the world.
The key to strengthening existing congregations is excellend leadership. Strength for Today...Bright Hope for Tomorrow will enable us to train effective leaders by funding:
- Scholarships for leadership training (for clergy, laity and local church teams);
- Internships (for college sophomores and juniors);
- Residencies (two year appointment for new seminary graduates to work with pastors in growing congregations.
